The Verona High School boys tennis team hosted Nutley for its opening match of the 2016 season and came away with a 5-0 win.
VHS has fielded a team heavy with seniors this year, and their experience is already telling. Leading the team at first singles, senior Michael Knothe defeated Hamid Hoshmand 6-3, 6-1. Fellow senior Wilson Hunsinger is playing second singled and trounced Jonathan La 6-4, 6-3, while Austin Yee, also a senior, took the win at third singles. He rallied from a 3-6 loss in his first set to defeat Andre Benitez 6-2, 6-1 in subsequent sets.
First doubles this year belongs to Brendan Carroll (class of 2016) and Chase Kaltner, and they won their sets 6-4, 6-2. Brendan McNally is paired with Steven Semeraro at second doubles and they rounded out the afternoon with 6-2, 6-1 wins.
Verona hosts Caldwell on Wednesday afternoon, with a 4 p.m. start.
