Verona resident John Zinn will present a talk, “New Jersey Baseball During the Civil War Era: 1855-1870”, at the Cedar Grove Historical Society meeting on Wednesday, March 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the Cedar Grove Public Library.
Zinn will discuss how New Jersey might be called baseball’s “incubator,” how the game developed and spread
throughout the state and the major differences between the game then and now. The talk is free and open to the public. The Cedar Grove Library is located at 1 Municipal Plaza, by the intersection of Pompton Avenue and Bowden Road.
Zinn is an independent historian with special interest in the history of baseball as well as the Civil War. He is the author of three books, including two on the Brooklyn Dodgers as well as numerous essays and articles. He writes a blog on the history of baseball entitled A Manly Pastime. He is also scorekeeper for the Neshanock Base Ball Club of Flemington team.
