CollinKiernanVerona High School pitcher Collin Kiernan has made a verbal commitment to play baseball for the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers University.

Kiernan, now a junior, began to get noticed in his freshman year when he started with the varsity team. He came to widespread attention last April after striking out 31 batters in just two starts. Kiernan had 107 strikeouts in all last season, with six of Verona’s 14 wins to his credit.

After multiple visits by college scouts and his own trips to campuses, Kiernan informed his family of his choice last night, saying of Rutgers, “I think this is the right place.” One big factor in his decision: Rutgers’ Bainton Field in Piscataway is close enough to Verona that hometown fans and family can see the games.
