SONY DSCVerona’s new Liberty Field celebrated its debut Wednesday night with victories by the Verona Baseball & Softball League’s 14U and 10U softball teams in hosting the first-ever games played at Verona’s gem in the hills. It was a glorious evening under the lights with the high stadium bleachers allowing a pristine view of the new turf field and surrounding vistas of Verona. All players have been anxiously awaiting the opening of this much needed sports complex to Verona’s recreation system! Thanks to Recreation Director Jim Cunningham and the VBSL’s Rich Williamson for pushing to have the field available for use in the 2015 season!

In the nightcap 14U game, Annie Johnson took the mound, fired a first-pitch strike and set the night’s tone–striking out eight and scattering seven singles for a complete game victory. Catching duties this inaugural night were shared by Allison Naeris and The General, Carlie Goldstein. The solid defense locked down the infield throughout the night led by Jordan Stafford at third base, Nicole Imbriano at shortstop, Jessie Loudon at second base, and first base secured by Christina Colon and Melanie Naeris. Diving catches and flawless fielding highlighted a night of error-free play. The outfield anchored by centerfielder Jenna DaRin, Annie Swanstrom and Jenna Romano limited West Orange’s big bats to singles and did not allow any extra bases. The offense scored 14 runs on the night with “Lightning” Loudon lead off the night with a single, and scorched the turf en route to scoring the first run at Liberty Field. The 14U composite bats pounded out hit after hit, with Allison Naeris and Jenna DaRin continuing their dominance at the plate driving in runs at will; and Stafford crossing the plate four times complemented by a 3-4 night at the plate. Coach Tim Stafford commented on his pride on a total team effort generating a win to commence Liberty Field’s history.
