Whippany Park was up 1-0 before the half but Verona returned to the field with its game head on and #7 Thiago Queiroz, a junior, quickly evened the game to a tie. Then #11 Chris Yeates turned on the afterburners and scored two goals in five minutes to put Verona ahead 3-2. Zach Pitassi scored both goals for Whippany Park. Billy Czupak was in goal for Verona and was credited with six saves.
The Hillbillies had opened the season at home against Passaic with a first half similar to the Whippany game. Yeates, a senior, tied things up in the second, but Passaic pulled away with two more goals.
The boys team travels to Nat Turner Field in Newark on Thursday afternoon to face Central High School.
VHS girls soccer, meanwhile, opened its season with a bang, scoring a strong win over West Orange on Wednesday afternoon. Emily Coppola, Lara Tole and Meghan Yeates had a goal apiece in the 3-1 win at home. Goalie Diana Flores had 11 saves for Verona. The girls are away at Montclair Kimberley Academy on Friday.
