As anyone who lives in the Wayland section of Verona knows by now, Park Avenue is closed from Bloomfield to Sunset avenues during the day for the next two weeks. That’s a big headache for traffic to and from the Brookdale area. There are PSE&G trucks on the scene from dawn to dusk, and a lot of digging and patching, and readers wanted to know why.
According to a PSE&G spokeswoman, the utility is “proactively” upgrading the gas line on Park to increase system pressure for approximately 200 customers in the area of Valhalla Way. (Valhalla Way is in the middle of the Brookdale section and intersects with Park Avenue close to the entrance of Verona Park.) “This work is part of our efforts to continuously improve our infrastructure, making our system more safe and reliable,” she said. PSE&G noted that the work is being performed at no cost to the customers.
While PSE&G seems to have been on the scene quite a bit in Verona lately, the spokeswoman said the Park Avenue work is unrelated to problems elsewhere on the east side of town. The spokeswoman said that the manhole explosions that happened on Bloomfield Avenue in March were not caused by natural gas.
