The Verona High School girls lacrosse team advanced to the semifinals of the Essex County Tournament on Saturday with a thorough 18-7 defeat of Caldwell High School. Verona went into the quarterfinals as the number four seed to Caldwell’s number five.
VHS’ Jackie Brozyna led the scoring for both teams with six goals, a scoring milestone she has achieved in just three previous games this season: Jefferson, Indian Hills and Columbia. The senior scored her 200th career lacrosse goal over spring break.
There was plenty of high scoring across the Verona squad, which is now 10-2 on the season. Maggie Ashley, a freshman, had four goals and two assists, while sophomore Dana Pena had three and an assist. Seniors Emilia Frizzi and Nicola Perzichilli showed off their expertise on the field with two goals and an assist for Frizzi and a goal for Perzichilli. Ava Anderson, another sophomore chipped in two goals.
Elsewhere in the county tournament, No. 1 seed West Essex shut down eighth-seeded Millburn with a 12-0 match. No. 2 Montclair rolled over Columbia 20-6 and third-seeded Glen Ridge defeated Montclair Kimberley Academy 13-3. Verona will face West Essex for the semifinals in an away game on Saturday, May 2, at 3 p.m.
