Verona High School’s spring sports have swung into action with a win for girls lacrosse yesterday, but losses for softball and baseball.
It was opening day for both softball and baseball. The girls were playing just over the border at Cedar Grove’s Panther Field and the game opened on a promising note. On her first swing in her first time at bat this season, senior Olivia Feiger scored an out-of-the-park home run. But that was to be Verona’s only run as Cedar Grove went on to take the game 5-1. Erin Stacevicz led the Panthers with a double, triple and two runs. Paige Ferrell pitched for Verona and allowed one earned run on seven hits, and struck out nine batters. The Lady Hillbillies take on Glen Ridge on Monday.
In baseball, Alex Hardenberg had the hot bat for Verona, with two hits and a run scored in three times at the plate. Austin Masters and Billy Gault had a hit and a run apiece. But Verona’s three runs were no match for Columbia, which took the game 7-3 thanks to Thomas Fetner’s two RBIs. On the mound, Collin Kiernan pitched four innings for Verona and got eight 8 strikeouts. Verona hosts Science Park today, with a 3:30 p.m. start.
In the girl’s lacrosse team’s third game of the young season, senior Jackie Brozyna continued her winning ways of last year, scoring four goals to power a 14-11 Verona win over Morris Catholic. Playing in Denville, Nicola Perzichilli had three goals and and assist for VHS, while Dana Pena scored twice. Amanda Maguire was credited with 12 saves.
The girls now have a 2-1 record, after a 13-3 opening win over Jefferson on March 27 and a narrow defeat by Bernard on March 30. The girls travel to Montville on Monday.
