The Verona High School boys basketball team defeated Arts High School 70-60 on Thursday and the score wasn’t the only thing that was sky-high.

Dave Gautieri scored 22 points for VHS, his best game not only this season but the best of the junior’s high school career so far. Gautieri, who at 6’6″ is the tallest player on the Verona squad, used his height to full advantage and led the team with seven rebounds. Fellow Hillbillies Will Mulderry and Charlie Matta had 15 and 11 points respectively on the afternoon.

It was that full-team play that made the difference for Verona, which led for most of the afternoon contest. But there were two high scorers for the Newark team as well: Javon Hill with 27 points and Chidozie Akawuaku with 23.

Verona is at Barringer High School today with a 1 p.m. start.Arts2015-2
