A motorist on Fairview Avenue sideswiped a car belonging to Verona’s superintendent of schools before flipping his car near the intersection of Fairview Avenue and Franklin Street.
UPDATE 10/31/2013, 3:10 p.m.: According to Verona Police Chief Doug Huber, Timothy Crozier, 32, of Linn Drive in Verona was traveling southbound in his Toyota when he swerved and hit the parked Fiat. He then swerved back out into the roadway and sideswiped a Lexus in the northbound lane. Crozier’s car went up on two wheels and left tire marks on the driver’s side door of the Lexus. The driver of that car was not injured.
Crozier has been charged with DUI. The Verona Police are still processing information on the accident and do not yet know how fast Crozier was traveling. “He is still in processing,” said Huber of Crozier. “He will be released to a responsible family member and get a court date.”
Huber confirmed that Crozier was involved in a separate accident in almost the same spot on Thursday afternoon. According to the report on that accident. Crozier told police that he swerved to get out of the way of a car door that was opening.
The superintendent’s car, a Fiat 500, was pushed up against the office building at 110 Fairview and appeared to be totaled. Superintendent Rui Dionisio, who just took over as Verona’s public schools chief this fall, was not in his vehicle at the time and was not injured. He did, however, get to announce the accident in an email to parents:
Dear Parents and Guardians,
There was a motor vehicle accident near Verona High School this morning at approximately 10:30 am near the corner of Fairview Avenue and Franklin Street. This accident did not involve any Verona students and our schools continued to operate on a normal schedule. Fairview Avenue was temporarily closed to address the accident by the Verona Police Department and has now been re-opened for regular traffic.
All my best,
Rui M. Dionisio
Superintendent of Schools
Verona Public Schools
121 Fairview Avenue
Verona, New Jersey 07044
The driver of the car was arrested at the scene and is suspected of driving under the influence. He has not been publicly identified, but is said to be the same driver who hit a parked car on Fairview yesterday. That car belonged to Verona schools Business Administrator Cheryl Nardino employee Cheryl Sluberski. It is not yet known if the same driver was involved in a Wednesday crash that totaled a car belonging to a former Verona High School student. UPDATE 10/31/2013, 3:10 p.m.: Crozier was not involved in that crash, Verona Police said.
