Carly Waterman is only a freshman, but she already has something in the Verona High School sports record books: On Saturday, the volleyball player broke the single-season kill record. With nine kills against Barringer High School, Waterman achieved 160 kills, breaking the record of 158 set by Eliza Sniatkowski last year.
Waterman recorded another 15 kills in during Verona’s three-set victory over West Essex on Monday, which means that she now has 175 kills on the season. (For the uninitiated, a “kill” happens when a player sends the ball to the ground on the opponent’s side of the court, ending the back-and-forth volley.)
Coach Jeff Stiefbold is thrilled with the accomplishment. “She fell in love with the game of volleyball and plays as often as she can in the off season,” he says of Waterman, who has played club volleyball with the Allegro volleyball club the past two off seasons.
“Carly has done a great job being one of our main spikers this season,” Stiefbold says. “Her strong arm swing and smart placement of spikes have helped her reach this achievement. By the time Carly graduates, she should hold all of the spiking records at Verona High School.”
