Verona High School’s 2014-2015 sports season got off on the right foot yesterday with wins by both the girls soccer and volleyball teams.

Playing at home, the volleyball squad defeated West Orange 25-8, 25-17. Senior Alex Luehs was on fire with 2 aces, 13 service points, 6 kills and 13 assists. Fellow senior Cole McConnachie had 3 service points, 4 kills and 3 digs. And you’ll want to keep your eyes on the other end of the roster too this season: Carly Waterman, a freshman, had 4 aces, 6 service points, 6 kills and 2 digs in her first varsity outing.

In addition to Luehs and McConnachie, Verona’s squad consists of seniors Gabrielle Ayala, Jackie Brunner and Karla Molina; juniors Leah Ferrari and Julianne Sullivan; sophomores Caitie Kenneally and Olivia Lucanie; and freshmen Cameron Fuentez, Madisyn Matthews, Julianna Spina and Carly Waterman.

The team is at James Caldwell High School on Saturday for an invitational that brings together Caldwell, Cedar Grove, Mount Saint Dominic Academy and VHS. They face Nutley at home on Monday, with a 4 p.m. start.

Sophomore Bridgette Cumming scored one of Verona's two goals.

The girls soccer team, meanwhile, traveled down Lakeside Avenue to West Orange and came home with a 2-0 win on scoring by Julia Tole and Bridgette Cumming. Diana Flores was in goal and had eight saves for Verona, compared to just three for West Orange’s Heidi Paulson. Emilia Frizzi and Claire Fitzpatrick had an assist apiece for VHS.

The Hillbilly soccer squad is capped by nine seniors this season: Nina Bachvarova, Jackie Brozyna, Kelly Carr, Claire Fitzpatrick, Emilia Frizzi, Taylor Lavery, Jessica Nagy, Michele Robson and Julia Tole; juniors Megan Flood, Diana Flores, Amanda Maguire, Sarah O’Neil, Annaliese Tietjen and Sarah Yauch; sophomores Bridgette Cumming, Giuliana Frizzi, Carleigh Hoimark, Caleigh Holtan, Kaitlin Keane and Meghan Yeates; and freshman Anna Rosinski.

The girls host Montclair Kimberly Academy at Centennial Field on Monday, while the boys soccer team has its opener on the road at Glen Ridge. Both games have a 4 p.m. start.
