Verona held its third annual School’s Out softball tournament this past weekend. Teams competed at the 8U, 10U, and 12U levels. A total of 16 teams competed on Saturday with only four in each division going on to the final rounds on Sunday.
All three Verona teams made a strong showing, with both the 8U and 10U teams taking home first place trophies. Verona’s 12U squad led by Tim Stafford made several remarkable comebacks throughout Saturday to advance to the final rounds on Sunday, only to succumb to a very talented and tough West Milford team.
Peete Naeris, coach of the 10U squad, led his team to five victories, going undefeated in the tournament. The girls beat Mount Olive, Maplewood South Orange and had to face a tough West Milford team twice. The final would not be a contest as they took home the victory with an 8-0 win.
The 8U team also faced a challenging weekend going undefeated against Mount Olive, Kinnelon and West Milford. In the final against Mount Olive, Verona was down in the 4th inning 8-1, facing its biggest deficit of the weekend. Jim Loudon’s team did not falter and would go on to make a seemingly insurmountable comeback and take home the victory, 12-9.
All three teams are looking forward to the summer season ahead.
