It was a big day Wednesday for Verona High School sports teams, with wins for all the varsity squads in action.
Much of the credit goes to underclassmen on the teams. Doubles by freshman Kaitlyn Deo and sophomore Jackie Selby gave Verona softball a 7-6 edge in its game against Glen Ridge. Sophomore Olivia Haveron was 2-for-3 with a run. Junior Paige Ferrell pitched for the win, striking out eight and walking three while allowing just eight hits.
The team improved its record to 5-5. It hosts Paterson Charter on Friday at 4 p.m.
In baseball, VHS sent Bloomfield Tech home with an 11-1 defeat. Junior Chris Bujnowski was on the mound for Verona, striking out three in the five-inning contest and allowing just one run, two hits and a walk. Fellow junior Mike Cifaretto was 2-for-3, while Luke Weiss continued his power hitting with a home run and three RBIs.
The Hillbillies are now 8-3. They take on Cedar Grove at home today at 4 p.m. The two teams’ annual rivalry fundraiser is next Tuesday, April 29, at Jackal’s Stadium on the Montclair State campus. The game starts at 7 p.m. and the gates open at 6:30. There will be food available and, as always, youth players wearing their jerseys will be admitted for free.
Up at Centennial Field Wednesday, the girls lacrosse team had another high scoring win. Junior Jackie Brozyna scored six goals as Verona defeated Kinnelon, 19-16. Sophomore Amanda Maguire was in goal, and made 14 saves. But VHS lax’ seniors showed no slowdown in their scoring: Gabi Mottola had four goals, Lauren Ednie had three, and Lizzy Scandiffio tossed in two.
The girls lacrosse team is now 9-2. It travels to Livingston on Monday for a night game.
