Verona High School graduate T.J. Conroy graduated from the Essex County College Police Academy in Cedar Grove on March 5 and became the newest member of the Verona Police Department.
Conroy has been working on joining the force for some time. His six months of training at the academy came on top of two years as a civilian dispatcher on the VPD and one year in its Records department.
“His performance was exemplary,” says Town Manager Joe Martin. “He is a very talented young man and we are very pleased to have him on the police force.”
Conroy began his field training with the Verona Police almost immediately. When he reported for work on Monday morning, he went out as the second officer in a squad car with a current member of the force. That training lasts until July.
Verona now has 26 sworn police officers, including Chief Doug Huber. That is down from 32 when Martin started as town manager and Martin says he anticipates another retirement from the force by the end of this year.
