Bylancik has been in many shows during her 13 years at MKA, from Completely Hollywood (Abridged), to The Drowsy Chaperone, 10+, All the King’s Women, Grease, All Through the Night, Working From Bell to Bell, and The Adding Machine. But the junior is definitely pumped about playing Turnblad, who turns a teen music show in 1960s Baltimore on its head when she pushes for integration.
“I love the attitude that Tracy takes to everything because it is so different from virtually everyone else she encounters in the show,” says Bylancik. “Tracy loves life and continues to love life no matter what anyone around her says or tells her, and when she sets her mind to accomplish something, even something as big as integrating The Corny Collins Show, she stops at nothing until she accomplishes her goal. Tracy is a really fun and different character to play because she is always upbeat and has fun with everything she does, so I really have had a lot of freedom to just go as big as I can with her character.”
Hairspray will be performed at MKA’s Upper School on Friday, February 28 and Saturday, March 1, at 8 p.m. and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 2. Admission is $15 and tickets can be reserved by contacting show Director Nicole Hoppe at [email protected] or through MKA’s Web site.
