Nick DiStaso is here to help. The fast-skating senior starter has had an assist in virtually every Verona-Glen Ridge hockey team game this season. That’s not to say he’s only about adding to his teammates’ scoring: In VGR’s most recent game against West Orange–a 7-2 blowout, thank you very much–DiStaso capitalized on play-making by teammates Dylan DeCandia and Stephen Wenzl to put his own name on the puck that flew past the Mountaineer’s goalie. For his consistently solid play, Nick DiStaso is this week’s Verona Sports Boosters Senior Athlete of the Week.
DiStaso has been at this kind of game for quite some time. He started playing hockey at age five and skated for the Montclair Blues for years before he donned the maroon and white of VGR. He’s played with the varsity team for four years and has played tough from the beginning: DiStaso went toe to toe with Montclair Kimberley Academy in a memorable December 2011 game and wound up sidelined for more than a month with a broken ankle.
Not that he doesn’t have interests outside hockey. DiStaso has been a member of the Verona High School golf team for the past two years, somewhat fitting since he’s been a full-time summer employee at the Upper Montclair Country Club for quite a while.
During the 2013-2014 school year, the Verona Sports Boosters recognizes a different senior athlete at Verona High School every week. The Boosters support male and female athletes in all VHS sports through a variety of fundraisers and recognition events.
