Merle Burdett lived in Verona almost his entire life. He was a 1940 graduate of Verona High School, and played on its first varsity football team. After serving in the Pacific during World War II, he returned to Verona and to a long life of service to the town, as a Fire Department volunteer and chief, a 45-year member of the Verona Rescue Squad, an assistant scoutmaster, a Verona crossing guard and Little League coach. His obituary is here; you can also read about the “last call” parade that was part of his memorial service.
