Madison Misuro is very defensive–and that’s a good thing.
Misuro, a senior co-captain on the Verona High School volleyball team, was put into the role of defensive specialist this year, and she has stepped up to the task in more ways than one. Before being moved into her new position, Misuro had been a “libero”, a player who receives the serve and only plays back row. Now she has more wide-ranging responsibilities and has been standing out as a server.
In last week’s game against Newark Academy, Misuro served a perfect 15-15, with a team-leading 11 service points and five aces. Verona’s conference-clinching victory over Bloomfield Tech, Misuro finished with five service points, two aces and three digs. She also lead the team with five perfect serve receptions on eight attempts for the week. Her totals easily could have been higher, but the lady Hillbillies have been dispatching their opponents so fast this year that almost every game has been settled in two straight sets instead of three. In regular-season play this year, Misuro has totaled up 59 service points, 20 aces and 50 digs. For her efforts, Madison Misuro is this week’s Verona Sports Boosters Senior Athlete of the Week.
Volleyball is Misuro’s only sport at VHS but it is far from her only interest: She holds down an after-school job and is very active in the Youth Group at Our Lady of the Lake.
During the 2013-2014 school year, the Verona Sports Boosters recognizes a different senior athlete at Verona High School every week. The Boosters support male and female athletes in all VHS sports through a variety of fundraisers and recognition events.
