The New Providence High School Pioneers came to Verona High School yesterday for the first round of the NJSIAA Group I playoffs and the VHS volleyball team sent them westward with a loss. Verona defeated New Providence in two sets, 25-19, 25-18.
The VHS team was riding high after winning their first conference championship since 2001 last week, and came into the playoffs as the number 13 seed. Eliza Sniatkowski and Nikita Joshi had five kills apiece against New Providence, while Paige Ferrell had 12 service points. Alex Luehs again led the team in assists with 17.
What happens next is not yet completely known. Number 4 seed Glen Rock plays #29-seed Hawthorne this afternoon, and Verona will face the winner of that game on Friday, November 8.
In other sports news, the VHS girls soccer team fell Monday to Waldwick 4-0 in the first round of the NJSIAA section 1, group 1 soccer playoffs, ending their season. Diana Flores had nine saves in goal. The Verona boys soccer team is the #9 seed in its playoffs. It travels this afternoon to New Milford, which is the #8 seed.
