hbw-haralambiev-posterThe Verona Environmental Commission held its fifth annual “No Idling” poster contest on Wednesday, October 9, and more than 140 posters were submitted from Verona’s elementary schools and H.B. Whitehorne Middle School.

One winning poster was selected from each school: Peter Popowich (F.N. Brown), Wednesday Fischer (Brookdale Avenue), Amelia Koellhofer (Forest Avenue), Mark Serra (Laning Avenue) and Maxine Haralambiev (HBW), whose poster is featured above. The winners will be recognized at an award ceremony at Town Hall on November 4. Winners will receive $50 and a certificate signed by Verona’s mayor.

The VEC created the contest to draw attention to the importance of turning off car engines instead of idling to reduce asthma-causing pollution. The student posters have been displayed in schools and on traffic signs outside the public schools to remind parents to turn off their engines when they are waiting to pick up their children.

You can see all the posters submitted in the video below, and on bulletin boards in each of the participating schools.
