There were thirteen saves from Verona High School goalie Diana Flores, but they were not enough to save the VHS girls soccer team from a 2-0 defeat by Kinnelon at home on Wednesday. The girls, who are 2-9, host Newark Academy this afternoon.

On Tuesday, the boys soccer team handily defeated Science Park in Newark, 5-2. Senior Matt Braschi had two goals and an assist; Jack Yauch, Jhonatan Mejia and Jack Farrell also got on the scoreboard. Bill Gault was in goal and made 13 saves. The boys, who are 8-6-1, travel to Newark Academy this afternoon.

The volleyball team scored an upset over Montclair Kimberly Academy on Tuesday. After winning the first game 25-13, Verona lost the second 23-25. The Hillbillies were down by nine points at one point in the third game, but rallied to win 25-22. Junior Alex Luehs was a standout for Verona with 12 service points, six aces, three kills and 28 assists, which made her the state leader in assists that day. The VHS squad is currently tied for first place in the conference with Cedar Grove and MKA. The girls travel to Newark on Monday to face Barringer High School.
