The season is shaping up nicely for the Verona High School girls and boys cross-country teams.
On Tuesday, the Verona girls extended their winning streak in conference competition with wins over Nutley High School and Saint Vincent Academy at Branch Brook Park. Melanie Egan ran a 20:16, followed by Amanda Flores: 21:59, Julia Capuano: 22:59, Emily Petermann: 23:29, Sarah Conboy: 23:37, Ava Anderson: 24:15, Gabi Horton: 24:47, Madelyn Boyle: 28:01, Madeline Burke: 28:22 and Ali Smith: 30:41.
The boys, meanwhile, had wins against Shabazz and Orange high schools in Branch Brook Park. Matt Carroll led the Hillbillies with a time of 18:47 followed by Jim Cuddihy: 19:39, Ryan Ramsthaler: 19:46, Pat Cummings 20:04, Chris Feury: 20:15, Joey Volpe: 20:54, Brett Newell: 21:14, Brad Smith: 21:56, Dino Calandra: 22:33, Jake Parent: 23:24 and Nick Celfo: 25:23.
Last Friday, Egan took first place at the Maroon Invitational at Garret Mountain in a field of more than 80 runners, while her team garnered a second-place finish that included 10 other teams. Garret Mountain is a tough course that ends with a steep 800m hill to the finish line. Egan came in at 20:29, followed by Flores: 22:00, Capuano: 23:11, Petermann: 23:51, Conboy: 23:53, Anderson: 24:47 and Horton: 25:19.
The boys finished twelfth at the Maroon Invitational with Carroll coming in 25th overall at 18:55. Cuddihy finished in 19:48, Ramsthaler: 19:50, Cummings:20:08, Feury: 20:58, Newell: 21:19 and Smith: 21:25.
The girls team travels to Warinanco Park in Roselle for the Varsity Invitational on Saturday, while the boys next meet is Tuesday at Branch Brook Park.
