If you want to see one of the most prolific scorers in Verona High School athletics, you’ll need to go to Centennial Field and not blink. That’s because Troy Carrington will be down to the goal and back out for the next play before you do.
Carrington plays soccer, and only soccer, with a singular focus and speed that has made him one of the key assets on the VHS squad. Since 2011 you can count the number of games in which he hasn’t scored at least one goal on one hand, and sometimes the scoring is way more than one goal. When Verona rolled over East Orange High School on September 20, Carrington was responsible for three of the afternoon’s five Verona goals. For his prowess, the soccer striker is this week’s Verona Sports Boosters senior athlete of the week.
When not wearing maroon and white, Carrington competes with the Soccer Domain Football Club Gauchos, and helped take that team at the US Youth Soccer National Championships in 2011 and almost all the way there again in 2012.
During the 2013-2014 school year, the Verona Sports Boosters recognized a different senior athlete at Verona High School every week. The Boosters support male and female athletes in all VHS sports through a variety of fundraisers and recognition events.
