It was a bad day to be a Panther soccer player yesterday. Verona High School’s boys and girls soccer teams both soundly defeated their Cedar Grove opponents.
The girls played at home, and seemed to recover their footing after a 5-0 loss to Gov. Livingston on Monday. Junior Claire Fitzpatrick scored two of Verona’s goals in the 3-0 win, while fellow junior Bianca Quattrocchi scored the other. Cedar Grove got close to scoring twice, but goalkeeper Diana Flores, a sophomore, made sure that didn’t happen.
The boys took on Cedar Grove at Memorial Middle School and VHS freshman Jack Farrell was the star of the afternoon, scoring three goals in quick succession in the first half goals. Mitch Garrison put two goals towards Verona’s eventual 9-0 victory, while Jack Yauch and Doug Spardel each had a goal and an assist, and and Robert Farley and senior Matt Braschi scored. And Farrell wasn’t the only young player to see action in the game. The field was covered with sophomores during the second period: Sasan Hakimzadeh and JP McEvoy were both credited with an assist.
The boys are home against Columbia High School tomorrow, while the girls travel to Nutley’s Father Glotzbach field. Both games start at 4 p.m.
