The black bear cub that has been roaming through North Caldwell, Cedar Grove and Montclair for the last few days has climbed a tree in Montclair’s Watchung Park. It is a large tree and the bear appears to be very high up in it (see here). You can see a close-up photo of it on Baristanet’s Twitter feed here.

Baristanet is reporting that Montclair Police have roped off the entire park, which is near Watchung Booksellers, to people. Montclair public schools have suspended all outdoor activities today because of the bear.

UPDATE 3:10 p.m.: Lydia Bashwiner posts on MyVeronaNJ.com’s Facebook page that her husband ran into a bear at the Mills Reservation.
UPDATE 3:03 p.m.: Baristanet says there was just a bear sighting in the Mills Reservation. Essex County Sheriff has been notified.
UPDATE 10:01 a.m.: The bear cub is safely on the ground.
UPDATE: 9:57 a.m.: Sharon Gill, a realtor who lives in the area, says the bear has been tranquilized and appears to be on its way down into a net below.
UPDATE 9:45 a.m.: Fire truck has pulled in.
UPDATE 9:24 a.m.: Montclair animal control is on the scene with a net.

Dan Robinson's brother-in-law sent this photo of the bear safely on the ground.
