Verona’s town Web site says of the house that, “There seems little doubt that Washington and Lafayette traveled past the original portion of the old house on their way from Cranetown to Morristown during the Revolutionary Period. ” (If you’ve forgotten your New Jersey history, “Cranetown” was an early name for Montclair.)
The house, which has a plaque by the door that says “Circa 1750, has been amply modernized for 21st century living. It was put up for sale in November 2011, but taken off the then-slow Verona real estate market a few months later. The original Priest farm tract emcompassed much of what is now the Laning Avenue elementary school district. The current property is smaller, but still quite generous in Verona terms.
