On Tuesday, the Verona High School varsity softball team played Newark’s Science Park High School. Before the game, the girls were honored as this was not only the last home game, but it was also Senior Day. The seniors on the softball team are #2 Laura Hart, #3 Courtney Paganelli, #7 Marissa Manley, #12 Olivia Lewis and #13 Brianna DaRin.

When the game started, Manley was pitching for Verona. She started out with a two-hit, two-strikeout inning. #6 Caroline Chivily led off with a single. #8 Olivia Feiger came up and hit a two-run double. Paganelli got an RBI single to add to Verona’s lead. #10 Shelly Herman loaded the bases with a single and a walk scored another. Chivily hit a grand slam and the score was 8-1 Verona at the end of the inning.

Hart-ScienceThen Hart and #11 Remy Sullivan both hit singles to put runners on first and second. DaRin hit a single to put runners on first and third. Paganelli hit a two-run double to make the score 10-1 Verona with one out. #5 Caitlyn Barnes hit a single to put runners on second and third. Herman and #4 Olivia Haveron hit singles to make the score 12-1 Verona. Chivily hit a two-run triple to make the score 14-1. Lewis hit a sac fly and the score was 15-1 Verona with two outs. Hart popped out to end the second.

A two hit scoreless inning left the score 15-1. Sullivan started things out with a double. Paganelli and Herman got singles to load the bases, but Verona came up empty. Newark scored four and a fly ball caused Hart and Haveron to collide, and Hart went down in pain. #18 Marissa Ruhno replaced the hurt Hart at short. A groundout ended the inning and the mercy rule was used to end the game 15-4 Verona through five innings.

But apparently there was a mistake by the umpires and Verona needed one run to end the game. A 1,2,3 inning continued the game. Manley ended the inning with solid pitching and the game was officially over: 15-4 Verona was the final score.
