Verona - MKA G Lax-40457One extra point in the first period made all the difference. The Verona High School girls lacrosse team took on Montclair Kimberley Academy at home on Monday and, at the half, Verona had a 6-5 edge. The second half was a high-scoring dead heat, with both teams putting eight goals apiece on the scoreboard. When the final buzzer sounded, it was 14-13 Verona.

Sophomore Jackie Brozyna was on fire, leading her team with six goals. Senior Casie Milmoe was close behind with five, while Lauren Ednie, a junior, had three goals and an assist. Verona goalie Amanda Maguire, a freshman, had seven saves. Allie Bond was the high scorer for MKA with seven goals.

Verona’s record now stands at 6-2. The girls travel to Millburn High School on Wednesday afternoon.

In other Verona sports action Monday, the baseball team’s record fell to 3-8 after losing to West Essex 2-0. Mike Coppola, a junior, had three hits in three trips to the plate and fellow junior Matt Rubins was two for four.
