GLax-Union1The girls lacrosse team rolled over Union Catholic yesterday, putting up a 16-1 victory on Centennial Field. Lizzie Scandiffio was the high scorer with three goals, while Jackie Broznya, Lauren Ednie, Olivia Marino and Casie Milmoe each had a twofer. Lynn Keating was credited with a goal and two assists.

“We had 10 different people score yesterday which is huge,” says Coach Suzanne Giarusso. “You don’t see that on a lot of teams. It should help against some of the teams we face later. If they mark one person on our team we still have plenty to score.”

The Verona High School golf team improved its record to 4-0, handily beating Mountain Lakes 155 – 203. Frank Ferrari shot a 35, Hunter Grasso shot 38 and Bobby Leblein shot 39. Last Thursday, Verona narrowly defeated the defending county champion Caldwell in a 171-172 match. Ferrari shot a 37 in that match, beating top 20 Caldwell player Aaron Rayney. Leblein shot 41 and John Cifune hit a 58-foot putt on the last hole to win the match for Verona. GLax-Union2

In other sports, the Hillbilly baseball team rallied in the seventh inning, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Newark Academy’s lead. Scoring was evenly spread across the VHS boys, with RBIs for Mike Coppola, Dean DeNicola, Matt Rubins and Jon Tosh. The Minutemen took the game 9-7, dropping Verona’s record to 1-4.

The news was better from F.N. Brown field, where the softball team defeated Montclair Kimberley Academy 5-2. Ellen DiDia, Olivia Feiger, Laura Hart and Courtney Paganelli had the hot bats. The win improves the girls record to 2-3.

On Tuesday, the golf team takes on Belleville and New Providence, the baseball team faces St. Benedict’s Prep at home, tennis and boys lacrosse are away at West Orange and Union City respectively, and the track teams compete in Bloomfield.
