When you hear the words “archaeology dig”, you usually think of a place far from Verona. But Jane Eliasof, the Verona resident who is the director of the Montclair Historical Society, is inviting students from Montclair State University’s Center for Heritage and Archaeological Studies to dig on Saturday and Sunday, March 23 and 24, on the grounds of the MHS’s Israel Crane house.
When the MHS was clearing the Crane house property for its community garden last year, they discovered glass and pottery from Montclair’s past in the soil. Today and tomorrow, the students will try to find out what else is there. They’ll be digging from about 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and you can stop by and watch for free. The Crane house is located at 108 Orange Road in Montclair, a few short blocks off Bloomfield Avenue.
