Butler10Amanda Langan had her biggest scoring day this year, but it was not enough to take the Verona High School girls basketball team to the finals.

Verona, which had entered the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 1 tournament as the No. 3 seed, took on seventh-ranked Butler High School yesterday for the semifinals. Langan, a senior who hit 1,000 career points this winter, pulled out all the stops and led her team with 27 points and 14 rebounds, but Butler came away with a 54-47 victory. Maja Sekulovska was the top scorer for Butler, with 20 points.

In play that bodes well for next year, sophomore Sarah O’Neil added seven point to the Verona tally and junior Julie Rosenberg had six. There were contributions from underclassmen Brielle Cummings, Claire Fitzpatrick and Caroline Kiernan.

The other Section 1, Group 1 semifinal yesterday saw Midland Park defeat Cresskill 45-32. The final between Midland and Butler is Monday, March 4.
