The Verona Police Department has been notified that HomeServe, an emergency repair service, will once again be soliciting business in Verona.
HomeServe USA is a private company that provides various kinds of emergency home repairs, from water line breaks to HVAC system problems. Its efforts to solicit business in Verona last year drew attention because some residents thought that HomeServe was affiliated with the Township of Verona. HomeServe has told the police that it will be sending a new mailer this month.
As we noted last year, Homeserve’s water line service business is not a scam, but it may not be something you need. Just as with service programs for electronic device and home appliances, these contracts may not make sense if the item’s repair cost or its rate of failure is low.
And the rate of failure of water lines in Verona is low. According to Police Department Captain Mitchell Stern, Verona residents applied for only four permits for water line repairs in 2012, down from seven in 2011. The number of water line permits pulled in 2010 was also four.
