There are now two hats in the ring for the May 14 Town Council elections in Verona. Al DeOld, a former industrial arts teacher at Verona High School who has become one of the most regular participants at Council and Board of Education meetings, has announced his intention to seek a Council spot.

DeOld, who served on the Citizens Budget Review Committee in 2011, lays out his platform on his Web site. He is committing to no increase in the municipal budget in the first year of his term and a decrease in the budget in the second year. DeOld, who generally steps up to the lectern at Council meeting with a yellow-legal pad full of notes and analyses of the measures under consideration, also says he wants to “convince more council members to consider expenditures more carefully before voting.”

“Verona has experienced significant tax increases during the last few years – in the middle of a recession,” DeOld says on his Web site. “Too many of our expenditures were unnecessary”. DeOld, who was a teacher for 38 years and now spends his retirement as an antiques dealer specializing in Edison record players, also has a campaign page on Facebook.

There are three spots up for a vote this May. Council members Jay Sniatkowski and Bob Manley are completing full four-years terms, and Councilman Kevin Ryan is completing the unexpired term to which he was elected in 2011. None of the currently serving Council members has announced a new campaign. Town Manager Joe Martin says that six people have picked up election packets in Town Hall. More may still do so: Potential candidates have until 4 p.m. on March 11 to return their packets, which must include at least 104 signatures of registered voters who live in Verona supporting their candidacy.

  1. Congratulations on entering the race for town council.
If you are truly and sincerly committed to the future of Verona, I ask that you attend the next Board of Adjustment meeting, Monday 2/11/13 at 7:30PM and help the people of Verona convince the Board that there is no need for these variances and all the blasting that will go with them. If you read Letters to the Editor in last week’s VCG Times you will find all the reasons why these variances should be denided.
    Hope to see you there

  2. I am happy to see that Al has entered the race. As the article points out he consistently attends meetings and is well aware of the fiscal challenges ahead.
