Girls Track Takes Second In Jersey City

The Verona High School girls winter track and field team came in second on Saturday in a field of 14 teams at the SEC Liberty Division Championships at the Jersey City Armory. Melanie Egan broke the meet record with her first place finish in the 3200m with a time of 11:53. The previous record was 12:25,set in 2010. Egan also was third in the 1600m with a 5:38 performance.

In other scoring performances, Kelsey Attamante took second in the 800m at 2:34 and third in pole vault with a height of 7’6″. Gabriela Mercurio got second place in pole vault with 8′. Amanda Flores came in second in the 3200m with a 12:42 time and took sixth in the 1600m at 5:50. Julia Capuano was fifth in the 3200m at 13:55. Sarah Conboy had a third place finish in the 800m at 2:35.

The 4 x 400m relay team of Attamante, Conboy, Marybeth Grund and Julia Ashley took third place in 4:25. Laura Williams came in fourth in the high jump at 4’6″. Jasmine Okafor took fourth in shot put with a throw of 28′ 9 3/4″ and Diana Moczula took sixth in the same event at 27′.

The next track meet is Thursday, January 3 at Fairleigh Dickinson University at 4:30 p.m. and the Essex County Relays are next Sunday.
