The Christmas to New Year’s break is a traditional time for some wide-open tournament play. The games kick off today, Thursday, December 27 with the basketball teams and hockey squad, and continue through the weekend. Here’s what’s happening when today:
9 a.m.: Boys JV Holiday Basketball Classic against West Essex. VHS Main Gym
10:30 a.m.: Girls JV Holiday Basketball Classic against West Essex. Also VHS Main Gym
1:30 p.m.: Boys Varsity Holiday Basketball Classic against West Essex. Caldwell College’s George R. Newman Center
6 p.m.: Girls Varsity Holiday Basketball Classic against West Essex. Caldwell College’s George R. Newman Center
8 p.m.: Verona-Glen Ridge Hockey Holiday Classic against Nutley High School. Codey Arena
The second round of the basketball tourney will take place on Friday. The varsity teams will play at Caldwell College, while the JV teams travel to West Essex High School. The Super Essex Conference pole vault championship will take place at Ultimate Sports in Oakland starting at 4 p.m.
On Saturday, the track action moves to the Jersey City Armory starting at 9 a.m. The Hillbilly wrestlers travel to Bloomfield High School for a 9 a.m. match. VGR is back on the ice at the Codey Arena at 5 p.m.
On Sunday, the hockey team takes on Livingston High School at Codey at 3 p.m.
And while the varsity teams get a break from competition on New Year’s Eve, the JV wrestling squad travels to Bloomfield for a 9 a.m. meet.
