Even a losing game has its winners. The Verona High School girls basketball team took on Butler High School just before the Christmas break and came up at the short end of a 44-33 match. But that headline score doesn’t come close to telling the story of what happened on the court that day.
Senior Amanda Langan, a four-year starter for Hillbilly hoops, put up 13 points and pulled down an astonishing 19 rebounds. Though basketball season has only just begun, No. 11 already has 46 rebounds and 53 points to her credit, having scored 17 points against Glen Ridge High School in a Verona sweep on December 20. For her efforts on the boards, Langan is the Verona Sports Boosters’ Senior Athlete of the Week.
Langan’s smile when she takes to the basketball court belies the intensity with which she plays the game. She has 921 career points to her credit. Her stats are just as impressive in the other sport that keeps her for hours in VHS’s gyms: volleyball. A four-year member of that team, Langan has 21 aces, 54 digs and 81 kills on her stat sheet.
She is one of Verona High School’s academic achievers, too. A regular on the honor rolls, Langan was one of only 18 students inducted into the Verona Chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, the National Math Honor Society this past May.
During the 2012-2013 school year, the Verona Sports Boosters will be recognizing a different senior athlete at Verona High School every week. The Boosters support male and female athletes in all VHS sports through a variety of fundraisers and recognition events.
UPDATE: After the holiday week tournaments, Langan’s career points total is now 945.
