Sophomore Sarah O’Neil led the Verona High School girls basketball team to victory in its season opener against Saint Vincent Academy on Friday afternoon. O’Neil put up 16 points for Verona in the 59-43 win. Juniors Julie Rosenberg and Brielle Cummings and senior Amanda Langan all scored in the double-digits as well, and Langan led her team with nine rebounds. The girls face Bloomfield High School at Bloomfield on Tuesday afternoon.
The boys basketball team travelled to Weequahic High School and came away on the short end of a 29-41 score. Junior Alex Kaslander had 16 points in the opener, but none of the other Verona players got into the double digits. The Hillbillies will be playing this season without senior Luke Sniatkowski, who suffered a leg injury in football. The boys, who are in a new division this year, take on Belleville at home on Tuesday.
Jake Biondi had 34 saves, but the Verona-Glen Ridge game up empty handed in its Friday evening game against Livingston High School. Livingston player Seth Crockett dominated the scoring in the 4-0 contest. VGR, which is 0-4-1, on the season, is playing Nutley High School at the Codey Arena tonight.
