The Verona-Glen Ridge hockey team took on neighboring West Essex High School at Cody Arena on Friday, and it was a night for freshmen players.

In his first start of the season as goalie, Verona freshman Liam Blaney stopped 34 of West Essex’s 35 shots. Fellow freshman Stephen Wenzi from Glen Ridge scored midway through second period to give VGR a one-nothing lead.

VGR maintained the lead until the final minute, when West Essex player Louis Coniglio scored to tie it up. VGR takes on Essex County rival Montclair at Clary Anderson Arena on Wednesday December 12 at 7:30 p.m.
