From time to time, we all look out for number one. It’s understandable. But at the Thanksgiving Day football game, the entire Caldwell team was looking out for number one: Verona High School player Dean DeNicola, who sports a big number one on his jersey. On Thanksgiving, DeNicola scored a touchdown on a 70-yard pass and had another reception for 84 yards on the day. Dean DeNicola is this week’s Verona Sports Boosters Senior Athlete of the Week.
DeNicola has made the most of his final season on the Hillbilly football team, where he is both a wide receiver and defensive back when not handling the duties of back-up quarterback. In the November 10 game against Newark’s East Side High School, DeNicola turned a Red Raiders fumble into Verona’s first score. He made two spectacular interceptions in the October 20 game against arch-rival Cedar Grove that kept the Hillbillies close to the Panthers. The three-season athlete is a two-year member of the basketball team and a varsity baseball pitcher and third baseman, and was named to second team All Division of the Super Essex Conference in that sport.
During the 2012-2013 school year, the Verona Sports Boosters will be recognizing a different senior athlete at Verona High School every week. The Boosters support male and female athletes in all VHS sports through a variety of fundraisers and recognition events.
