On Friday evening, March 15, 2013, the Verona High School Concert Band is seeking to perform at Carnegie Hall. They will be one of the featured artists, in addition to the Eastern Wind Symphony, a professional group.
The appearance will cost $12,000 and the Verona-based organization C.H.I.L.D. (Children Having Individual Learning Differences) has agreed to provide a $5,000 grant toward that cost. The band has also been fundraising.
But the Concert Band still needs to raise a little more than $4,000. So band members will be at Fair in The Square this Saturday accepting donations. If you can’t get to the fair, but want to help, the band wants you to know that here is also a “Donate” PayPal button on the Music Department’s Web site.
Under the direction of Erik Lynch, the VHS Concert Band has won many awards, often in competition against schools that are many times larger. This past spring, the band was the featured performer at the New Jersey State Gala concert and was the first non-professional group to ever play the “Wednesdays at Noon Concert Series” at the Cathedral Basilica in Newark.
