Girl Scout Leader’s Stove-Top Oven

Pauline Davey is a leader of Girl Scout troop 144 in Verona, and like most scout leaders, she’s used to cooking in rustic conditions. Verona isn’t usually rustic, but since Hurricane Sandy hit, we’ve had to adapt. She texted us this tip for turning your stove top into an oven:

Stove top oven is made with a large cookie sheet turned upside down. Burners on. Put pan or items to heat on sheet. I recommend using foil. Then cover it all with metal lasagna pan. Instant oven. Not recommended for cooking raw food. Heating worked fine. To make toast or waffles, put baking racks on stove grate. Flame on low. Place item to toast on. Must be watched. We have made toast and frozen waffle this way.
