United Way today announced the creation of the United Way Hurricane Sandy Recovery Fund (#sandyfund). Contributions to the Fund will be used by local United Ways along the Eastern Seaboard, including United Way of Northern New Jersey, to address the near-term and long-term recovery needs of communities most affected by the hurricane.
In addition, the Fund will be utilized to bolster United Way’s local partners as they support those affected who were already vulnerable — struggling with food insecurity and the ability to meet their most basic needs.
“Many in our communities have lost so much and we know they will not be made whole overnight,” said United Way of Northern New Jersey CEO John Franklin. “There are always unmet needs that only the local community can address over time. United Way is poised to get families connected with the right supports for individual needs. We will be reaching out through our extensive regional network to see that families facing ongoing hardships are not forgotten in the weeks and months to come.”
Contributions to the Fund will be used by local United Ways in 12 states, including New Jersey. In the areas where the Fund is operating, Hurricane Sandy has affected nearly 8 million people.
Donations to the United Way Hurricane Sandy Recovery Fund can be made online at uwsandyrecovery.org. A $10 donation can be made by texting the word RECOVERY to 52000. Promote the United Way Hurricane Sandy Recovery Fund on Twitter using #sandyfund.
At the request of and in coordination with United Way U.S.A., United Way of New York City is leading these fundraising efforts and will ensure that all funds are used efficiently and effectively to serve those in need. United Way of New York City will charge no administrative fees.
United way does wonderful work. I live in area of upstate New York that was seriously impacted by Irene. I worked as a disaster crisis counselor. I am headed down to NYC, bringing supplies hoping to find opportunity through United Way to do outreach or otherwise help with Sandy impacted. Thank you for all you do.
