Tree on a power line on Depot Street

Though PSE&G trucks have been spotted on Pease,  Verona Police are saying that about 75% of town remains without power.

If you don’t have power, call PSE&G  at (800) 436-7734 and not the police. If your power is out, even though the rest of the street is out, the police are recommending that you call the power company and let them know. Since the power company restores circuits based on the largest number of customers first, the more information that they have, the better off you are.

Most streets in town are passable, but police say go slow when you are out driving since there are still a lot of branches and wires hanging.

You may place your storm debris (branches and tree limbs only) at the curb for pickup by the Verona Department of Public Works. Pickup has begun, and will continue until announced otherwise. The police are asking that you NOT put leaves at the curb. You’ll have to haul them yourself to the leaf dump, which is open 7 days a week.

Garbage pickup resumes on a limited basis on Thursday, November 1. Recycling pickup will resume then too.

The Township and Board of Education ask that you NOT celebrate Halloween by trick or treating tonight due to the continuing safety hazards caused by downed power lines. An alternative date will be set once we are satisfied that there are no storm related safety issues. Gov. Christie is recommending Monday, November 5 for Halloween.

Finally,  the police ask that you remember to keep all generators at least 10 feet from your home, and to keep the generator exhaust pointed away from your home. It is also good practice to keep any windows and doors near the generator closed. These suggestions will help to keep dangerous exhaust gas from entering your home. Under NO circumstances should a generator be operated inside of a house or business, including attached garages.

The Verona Board of Education will hold the meeting that was scheduled for October 30 on November 1. Private session will start at 7:30 p.m. and the public session at 8 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Verona Town Hall Council Chambers.
