When he started this season with the Verona High School boys cross country team, John Conboy had some pretty big shoes to fill. No, not literally. We have no idea what size shoe Dave Oster, Dave Lukas and Nick Lukas wore when they ran the circuits of Branch Brook and Warinanco parks for Verona. Conboy, a four-year veteran of the VHS cross country team, had to step up to be a leader of a young team.
And that’s just what he has done. Conboy has been the number one runner for the Verona boys cross country team in every meet so far this season. And it has been, by all counts, a highly successful season in the S.E.C. Colonial Division this year: The Verona Boys have been undefeated in weekly competition. Conboy has run personal records in just about every race this season, leaving his times from freshman year in the dust.
On October 9, Conboy lead his team to a conference championship at Branch Brook Park–with more than bit of drama, we might add. With just 50 meters left in the race, Conboy passed two runners from Irvington, putting Verona out in front of Glen Ridge, 36-37, to win the team title. Conboy is this week’s Verona Sports Boosters Senior Athlete of the Week.
During the 2012-2013 school year, the Verona Sports Boosters will be recognizing a different senior athlete at Verona High School every week. The Boosters support male and female athletes in all VHS sports through a variety of fundraisers and recognition events.
