Senior Athlete Of The Week: Ryan Lavery

Verona High School is a small enough place that students can, over their four years, test their academic and athletic abilities in many ways. And more often than not, those challenges show surprising capabilities.

So it has been with Ryan Lavery. A varsity player at VHS for three years, he played freshman basketball and baseball through his sophomore year before concentrating on soccer. Last year, he was a junior member of the defensive lineup that kept the scoring against Verona to a minimum, helping Verona to its best season since 1981.

But defensemen don’t often get the limelight that comes with scoring. Before this season, Lavery had just one goal to his credit, which came in a lopsided victory over East Orange last year. So when he slammed two goals into the net against Science Park last week and rallied a comeback win for Verona, it was an accomplishment worthy of notice. Ryan Lavery is this week’s Verona Sports Boosters Senior Athlete of the Week.

During the 2012-2013 school year, the Verona Sports Boosters will be recognizing a different senior athlete at Verona High School every week. The Boosters support male and female athletes in all VHS sports through a variety of fundraisers and recognition events.
