A festival will bring 14 marching bands to VHS on Saturday evening.

It’s one of those weeks when you’ve got to dress your kids in different colors for different activities at school, and the school week ends with a half day on Friday. Here’s what else is happening.

Monday, October 1: It’s Respect Week at H.B. Whitehorne Middle School and the color for today is blue. It’s also Respect Day at Brookdale and kids there are asked to wear red. The girls volleyball team faces Bloomfield Tech at home. Both the girls tennis team and the boys soccer team have away games at Caldwell High School. All games start at 4 p.m. The Town Council meets at 7 p.m. in Town Hall.

Tuesday, October 2: Picture day at HBW and the Respect Week color is yellow. Team jersey day at Brookdale. Girls soccer is away at Nutley, but volleyball is home against Bloomfield. The cross country teams are in Branch Brook Park for a meet.

Wednesday, October 3: Walk to School Day at all Verona public elementary schools. Kids should also bring their poster entries for the Verona Environmental Commission’s contest to raise awareness about the dangers of idling cars at school. Picture day at HBW again and the Respect Week color is green. It’s also green at Brookdale, which will be focusing on the environment. The boys soccer team is home at Centennial at 4 p.m., while the girls tennis team is home against Glen Ridge.

Thursday, October 4: The HBW Respect Week color is black. Back-to-School Night at HBW: 7 to 9 p.m., but new band and chorus parents should report at 6:15 p.m. Grade 2 Brownies meet after school at Forest. The girls soccer team is away at Mount Saint Dominic Academy.

Friday, October 5: Half day at all Verona public schools. The HBW Respect Week color is red. The boys soccer team faces Cedar Grove at Centennial at 4 p.m. and the girls take on the Panthers at 7 p.m.

Saturday, October 6: The football team takes on MKA at their field at 2:30 p.m. Marching band festival at VHS. There will be 14 bands competing, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Sunday, October 7: Verona Fire Department pancake breakfast at the fire house across from Everett Field.
