One of last year’s winning posters

This Wednesday, October 3, is Verona’s annual Walk to School Day. If you are a Verona public school student in grades 1 through 8, it is also the day to submit your entry for the 2012 No-Idling Poster Contest sponsored by the Verona Environmental Commission.

The VEC created the contest to draw attention to the importance of turning off car engines instead of idling. The student posters have been displayed in schools and on traffic signs outside the public schools to remind parents to turn off their engines when they are waiting to pick up their children.

To participate in this year’s contest, draw your own “Idle Free Verona” poster on letter-size paper. Include your name and grade and bring it to school on Walk to School Day. All posters will be displayed in participating schools to raise awareness for cleaner air. Winners will receive $50 and an award certificate.

For more information, watch “Go Idle Free Verona” at the VEC’s Web site. The video features students from H.B. Whitehorne Middle School.
