Senior Ryan Lavery had two goals and Matt Braschi and Troy Carrington chipped in with one each as Verona came from behind to top Newark Science 4-1. Science got on the board first with Jorge Liviponia’s goal. Carrington had two assists and Jake Corbett had one. Mike King had eight saves in goal for the 3-4 Hillbillies.
The volleyball team evened their record at 5-5 with a sweep of Newark Academy yesterday in Livingston. The Hillbillies took the first game 25-20 and won the second game 25-21. Casie Milmoe led the team in assists and Eliza Sniatkowski led with 8 digs. Amanda Lanagan, Catherine Aracil, Jessica Parsons and Sniatkowski combined for 12 kills.
The girl’s tennis team suffered a close 3-2 loss yesterday at the hands of the Knights of West Essex High School. Senior Jackie Noyes won her first singles match 6-3, 6-1 and junior Ciarra Davison held off the Knights’ Amanda Alhout 6-1,2-6,6-4 in second singles. In third singles Allie Vaccaro fell 4-6, 3-6 and the Hillbillies were swept in in doubles matches, dropping their record to 4-6 on the season.
It’s a busy weekend schedule in Hillbilly Country. Today, the girls’ soccer is at Centennial Field against the Newark Academy Minutemen. The tennis team faces the Livingston Lancers at home. The eighth-seeded volleyball team plays their opening match of the Essex County Tournament at home today against Montclair Immaculate. All contests start at 4 p.m. Saturday morning the cross country team travels to Warinanco Park in Roselle for a 9 a.m. start and the football team is home against Newark Central at 1 p.m.
