Harrington after the Hoboken victory

In the end, it may not have mattered that Mike Harrington didn’t win NJ.com’s Essex County Player of the Week last week. That’s because on Saturday, Harrington–who had already had a fabulous opening game to the football season–pulled down a catch that turned the game against Shabazz High School from near-certain defeat to stunning success. Harrington is the Verona Sports Boosters Senior Athlete of the Week.

Watch the series of photos captured by Bob Thomas to see how remarkable that last play was. All 6 feet and 175 pounds of Harrington is two feet off the ground, but surrounded by what seems to be a wall of Shabazz players. He captures Frank Ferrari’s pass and holds on to it as he and his opponents fall back to earth. It looks for all the world like something out of Eadweard Muybridge’s 19th century photographic studies of human motion.

Harrington headed into his final season at Verona High School with an impressive record behind him. He had 10 receptions for 199 yards last year, bringing his career total to 343 yards.

And then there was the thriller in Hoboken. In the opening game of the 2012 season, Harrington caught six passes for 114 yards, had two interceptions and had an 82-yard kickoff return touchdown in the last-minute 16-13 win. He was surrounded by TV cameras and reporters then, and had an even bigger clutch around him on Saturday.

During the 2012-2013 school year, the Verona Sports Boosters will be recognizing a different senior athlete at Verona High School every week. The Boosters support male and female athletes in all VHS sports through a variety of fundraisers and recognition events.
